Koran 39:42 — soera Az-Zumar, vers 42

ٱللَّهُ يَتَوَفَّى ٱلۡأَنفُسَ حِينَ مَوۡتِهَا وَٱلَّتِي لَمۡ تَمُتۡ فِي مَنَامِهَاۖ فَيُمۡسِكُ ٱلَّتِي قَضَىٰ عَلَيۡهَا ٱلۡمَوۡتَ وَيُرۡسِلُ ٱلۡأُخۡرَىٰٓ إِلَىٰٓ أَجَلٖ مُّسَمًّىۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَأٓيَٰتٖ لِّقَوۡمٖ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ

Het is Allah Die de zielen afvoert bij het intreden van de dood, alsook (de zielen) van de levenden die (tijdelijk) inslapen. (Dan) houdt Hij de zielen achter waarvoor Hij de dood heeft bepaald, en stuurt de rest voor een vastgestelde termijn terug (naar hun levenloze lichamen om te kúnnen ontwaken). Waarlijk hierin zijn tekenen voor mensen die diep nadenken.

Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die [He takes] during their sleep. Then He keeps those for which He has decreed death and releases the others for a specified term. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought

• Hilali & Khan: It is Allâh Who takes away the souls at the time of their death, and those that die not during their sleep. He keeps those (souls) for which He has ordained death and sends the rest for a term appointed. Verily, in this are signs for a people who think deeply.
• Rowwad Translation Center (en): Allah takes away the souls at the time of their death, and [also] those who have not died, during their sleep. He withholds the souls of those on whom He has decreed death and releases others until an appointed term. Indeed, there are signs in this for people who reflect.
