Coran 42:14 — sourate Ash-Shuraa, verset 14

وَمَا تَفَرَّقُوٓاْ إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا جَآءَهُمُ ٱلۡعِلۡمُ بَغۡيَۢا بَيۡنَهُمۡۚ وَلَوۡلَا كَلِمَةٞ سَبَقَتۡ مِن رَّبِّكَ إِلَىٰٓ أَجَلٖ مُّسَمّٗى لَّقُضِيَ بَيۡنَهُمۡۚ وَإِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ أُورِثُواْ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِمۡ لَفِي شَكّٖ مِّنۡهُ مُرِيبٖ

Or, ils ne se sont divisés, poussés par la jalousie, qu’après avoir reçu toutes les preuves. Sans un décret préalable de ton Seigneur renvoyant leur châtiment à un terme fixé, leur différend aurait déjà été tranché. Ceux qui, après eux, ont hérité des Ecritures sont remplis de doutes au sujet de la foi à laquelle tu les appelles.

And they did not become divided until after knowledge had come to them - out of jealous animosity between themselves. And if not for a word that preceded from your Lord [postponing the penalty] until a specified time, it would have been concluded between them. And indeed, those who were granted inheritance of the Scripture after them are, concerning it, in disquieting doubt

• Noor International Center (fr): Ils ne se sont divisés qu’après que la science leur fut parvenue (et ce par) hostilité des uns envers les autres. N’eût été le verdict de ton Seigneur déjà prononcé pour un terme nommé, ils auraient été départagés. Mais ceux qui, après eux, ont hérité du Livre, sont dans le doute le plus troublant (au sujet de leur religion).
• Hilali & Khan: And they divided not till after knowledge had come to them, through (selfish) transgression between themselves. And had it not been for a Word that went forth before from your Lord for an appointed term, the matter would have been settled between them. And verily, those who were made to inherit the Scripture [i.e. the Taurâh (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] after them (i.e. Jews and Christians) are in grave doubt concerning it (i.e. Allâh’s true religion - Islâm or the Qur’ân).
• Rowwad Translation Center (en): They did not become divided except after the knowledge had come to them, out of envious rivalry between them. Were it not for a prior decree from your Lord until an appointed term, a decisive judgment would already have been passed between them. Indeed, those who inherited the Scripture after them are in disquieting doubt about it.
