Coran 40:21 — sourate Ghafir, verset 21

۞أَوَلَمۡ يَسِيرُواْ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَيَنظُرُواْ كَيۡفَ كَانَ عَٰقِبَةُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَانُواْ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡۚ كَانُواْ هُمۡ أَشَدَّ مِنۡهُمۡ قُوَّةٗ وَءَاثَارٗا فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِذُنُوبِهِمۡ وَمَا كَانَ لَهُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ مِن وَاقٖ

N’ont-ils pas parcouru le monde et vu ce qu’il est advenu des peuples ayant vécu avant eux ? Supérieurs à eux en puissance, ceux-ci ont laissé sur terre bien plus de vestiges témoignant de leur magnificence. Pour prix de leur impiété, Allah leur a pourtant infligé un châtiment dont nul ne put les protéger.

Have they not traveled through the land and observed how was the end of those who were before them? They were greater than them in strength and in impression on the land, but Allah seized them for their sins. And they had not from Allah any protector

• Noor International Center (fr): N’ont-ils pas parcouru la terre pour voir quel fut le sort de ceux qui les ont précédés ? (Ils) étaient bien plus forts qu’eux, et ont laissé sur terre des vestiges bien plus importants. Mais Allah les emporta pour leurs péchés, et ils n’eurent, contre Allah, aucun protecteur.
• Hilali & Khan: Have they not travelled in the land and seen what was the end of those who were before them? They were superior to them in strength, and in the traces (which they left) in the land. But Allâh seized them with punishment for their sins. And none had they to protect them from Allâh.
• Rowwad Translation Center (en): Have they not traveled in the land to see what was the end of those who came before them? They were far superior in strength and left more impressive marks in the land, but Allah seized them for their sins, and they had none to protect them from Allah.

Tafsir (explication) de ce verset 40:21

Ces polythéistes n’ont-ils pas parcouru la Terre pour voir quelle fut la fin des peuples dénégateurs qui les ont précédés. Leur fin fut mauvaise alors que ces peuples étaient plus forts qu’eux et ont bâti plus d’édifices qu’eux, mais Allah les a anéantis pour leurs péchés et rien ne les protégea contre le châtiment d’Allah.
