Coran 34:14 — sourate Saba, verset 14

فَلَمَّا قَضَيۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ ٱلۡمَوۡتَ مَا دَلَّهُمۡ عَلَىٰ مَوۡتِهِۦٓ إِلَّا دَآبَّةُ ٱلۡأَرۡضِ تَأۡكُلُ مِنسَأَتَهُۥۖ فَلَمَّا خَرَّ تَبَيَّنَتِ ٱلۡجِنُّ أَن لَّوۡ كَانُواْ يَعۡلَمُونَ ٱلۡغَيۡبَ مَا لَبِثُواْ فِي ٱلۡعَذَابِ ٱلۡمُهِينِ

Lorsque Nous eûmes décrété sa mort, les djinns ne s’en aperçurent que lorsque des termites eurent rongé le sceptre sur lequel il était appuyé. Le voyant s’écrouler à terre, les djinns surent que s’ils avaient réellement eu connaissance des mystères, ils n’auraient pas continué à exécuter des travaux si humiliants.

And when We decreed for Solomon death, nothing indicated to the jinn his death except a creature of the earth eating his staff. But when he fell, it became clear to the jinn that if they had known the unseen, they would not have remained in humiliating punishment

• Noor International Center (fr): Quand Nous eûmes décidé sa mort, seules les (petites) bêtes de terre leur indiquèrent qu’il était mort après qu’ils eurent rongé son bâton d’appui. Lorsqu’il s’écroula devant eux, les djinns se rendirent compte que s’ils avaient la science de l’Inconnaissable (ghayb), ils n’auraient pas supporté plus longtemps le supplice de l’avilissement.
• Hilali & Khan: Then when We decreed death for him [Sulaimân (Solomon)], nothing informed them (jinn) of his death except a little worm of the earth, which kept (slowly) gnawing away at his stick. So when he fell down, the jinn saw clearly that if they had known the Unseen, they would not have stayed in the humiliating torment.
• Rowwad Translation Center (en): Then when We decreed Solomon’s death, nothing showed them that he was dead except a creature of the earth eating away his staff. When he fell down, the jinn realized that if they had truly known the unseen, they would not have remained in the debasing servitude.

Tafsir (explication) de ce verset 34:14

Puis lorsque Nous décrétâmes que Salomon allait mourir, les djinns ne furent avertis de sa mort que par l’insecte appelé termite qui rongea le bâton sur lequel il était appuyé. Ce n’est que lorsque Salomon tomba que les djinns prirent conscience qu’ils ne connaissent pas l’Invisible puisque s’ils le connaissaient, ils ne seraient pas restés à accomplir les travaux pénibles et humiliants que Salomon leur avait commandés, pensant qu’il était vivant et qu’il les surveillait.
